The AI provider did not answer, or refused the request

Short answer: Free tiers limit how much you can send each minute and each day, and providers sometimes run slowly. Wait a minute and try again, check the key is still valid, or switch provider.

What each message means

Message What it means What to do
“… did not answer within … seconds” The provider is slow or busy right now, or the request was very long. Try again in a minute, or switch to a faster provider such as Groq.
“The provider is rate limiting you” You have sent more than your free tier allows for now. Wait a minute and try again. If it persists, the daily allowance may be used up until tomorrow.
“That key was refused” The key is wrong, has been revoked, or belongs to a different provider. Check the provider matches the key, or create a new key and save it again.
“The provider says this key has no credit left” A paid key has run out of credit. Add credit with the provider, or use a free-tier key.
“The provider had a server error” A fault on the provider’s side. Try again shortly, or switch provider.
“The request could not reach …” You are offline, or this provider does not accept requests from a browser. Check your connection. If you are online, use another provider.
“The provider rejected the request: …” The provider gave its own reason. The two common ones are a key it does not accept and a model it has retired. Read the reason. Check the key, or paste a current model name into the Model field.

Why free tiers hit limits

Free tiers cap how many requests and how much text you can send per minute and per day. The AI tools send your text in one request each time you press the button, so pressing it repeatedly, or sending long documents, reaches the cap sooner.

Switching provider

Press Change beside the provider name in any AI tool, choose another provider and paste a key from it. The key is shared by every AI tool on the site. See Getting a free AI key and adding it.
