Most tools work in any current browser
Every tool runs as JavaScript inside your browser, on your own device. Any current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Opera or Samsung Internet runs them, on a computer or a phone.
Two things make a difference:
- Keep the browser up to date. The tools use features that older versions do not have. An out-of-date browser is the commonest reason a tool behaves differently for one person than for everyone else.
- JavaScript has to be on. With it switched off, a tool never gets past “Loading the tool…”.
The video tools need more
Most video tools rebuild your video frame by frame, and to do that they use the video encoder built into the browser. Not every browser has one, and not every browser can also write the sound an MP4 file needs. (Video to MP3 Converter and the Video Frame Extractor need neither, so they work in any current browser.)
| Browser | Video tools | MP4 with sound |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome or Edge on Windows or macOS | Yes | Yes |
| Safari on a Mac | Yes | Yes |
| Firefox 130 or later on a computer | Yes | No |
| Any browser on desktop Linux | Yes | No |
| Firefox on Android | No | No |
You do not need to check this yourself: a video tool tells you if your browser cannot encode video at all. Where MP4 with sound is not possible, most tools say what they will do instead — save a WebM file, or an MP4 without sound. Why a video saves as WebM or without sound explains the difference.
On a phone, use Chrome on Android or Safari on an iPhone. On an iPhone or iPad, Chrome and the other browsers use Safari’s engine underneath, so a tool behaves the same in all of them.
A few smaller differences
- AVIF images. Chrome and Edge can save an image as AVIF; Firefox and Safari cannot yet. The Image Format Converter tells you when you convert, and PNG, JPEG and WebP work everywhere.
- HEIC photos from an iPhone. Safari can usually open them; Chrome, Edge and Firefox cannot. See iPhone HEIC photos will not open.
- Apps with their own browser. The browser built into Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and similar apps often cannot save files. Open the page in Chrome or Safari when you need the download.
Still not working?
Try the same tool in a different browser. If it works there, the first browser is out of date or an extension is getting in the way — a private window, where most extensions are switched off, is the quickest way to tell. If it fails everywhere, tell us which tool and which browsers you tried.
