A transparent background turned white or black

Short answer: JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled in when an image is saved as JPEG. Save as PNG or WebP to keep them.

What happens

A logo or cut-out with a transparent background comes back with a solid white β€” or sometimes black β€” background.

Why it happens

JPEG has no way to store transparency. Every pixel in a JPEG is a solid colour, so when an image is saved as JPEG, the transparent areas have to be filled with something. The tools here fill them with white. A program that ignores transparency altogether shows the same areas as black.

PNG and WebP can store transparency, as can AVIF where your browser can write it.

What to do

  • Save as PNG or WebP. In the Image Format Converter and any tool with a format choice, pick PNG or WebP instead of JPEG.
  • Start from the original. Once an image has been saved as JPEG, the transparency is gone for good. Go back to the PNG you started with.
  • Need a JPEG anyway? Then choose the background on purpose: put the image on the colour of the page it will sit on, so the filled area blends in.
