A tool is stuck loading

Short answer: Part of the tool did not download, usually because of a slow or dropped connection or an extension that blocks scripts. Reload the page, and if it keeps happening, try a private window.

What you see

The tool shows Loading the tool… with a count such as “2 of 4 parts”, and the count stops moving. Or the loader gives way to This tool didn’t finish loading and a Reload page button.

While a tool is loading, its buttons are locked on purpose. Before that lock existed, a half-loaded tool looked ready: you could choose a file, press the button, and nothing would happen.

Why it happens

The page arrives first, and the parts that make the tool work — its scripts — download just after it. If one of them does not arrive, the tool cannot start. That is almost always one of these:

  • A slow or dropped connection. On mobile data or weak Wi-Fi, one download can stall while the rest of the page looks fine.
  • An extension that blocks scripts. Some ad blockers, privacy extensions and script blockers stop downloads they do not recognise.
  • A network that filters downloads. Some work, school and public networks block certain scripts.

What to do

  1. Press Reload page. Most stalls are a one-off.
  2. Check the connection, then reload again.
  3. Open the same page in a private window, where most extensions are off. If it loads there, allow this site in the extension that was blocking it.
  4. Try another network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi.

Nothing is uploaded while a tool loads — the downloads only go one way, from this site to your browser.

If none of that helps, tell us which tool it is and which browser you use.
