What free keyword tools cannot tell you

Search volume, competition scores and cost per click all come from proprietary datasets. Nobody gives those away, and any free tool showing you a volume figure is either estimating from a small sample or repeating a number it cannot stand behind.

That is worth knowing before you plan anything around one. The [msm_tool slug="keyword-research"] deliberately carries no volume data. It expands a seed word into six long-tail patterns, each labelled with the intent that pattern usually signals, and the same six come back for any seed you enter.

Which sounds like a limitation and is actually the useful part. The patterns are not suggestions to rank for — they are prompts, and seeing them together shows you which reasons for searching your page currently ignores.

Intent matters more than volume

A page fails far more often for answering the wrong question than for targeting a term with too little traffic. Four people search in four different states of mind, and each wants a different page:

  • Informational. What is X, how does X work. They want an explanation and will leave if you sell to them.
  • Comparative. X vs Y, best X for Z. They have decided to solve the problem and are choosing how. This is where most buying decisions are actually made.
  • Transactional. Buy X, X pricing. Ready to act. Anything that delays them costs you.
  • Navigational. They want a specific site and no content will divert them.

Match the page to the state. A pricing page ranking for what is gets impressions and no conversions; a tutorial ranking for buy gets clicks and immediate bounces. Both look like keyword problems and are page-type problems.

Why long-tail is the realistic target

A two-word head term has enormous volume and is contested by sites with a decade of authority. A five-word phrase has a fraction of the traffic, far fewer competitors, and visitors who told you precisely what they wanted.

Longer phrases also convert better, for an obvious reason: someone typing convert heic to jpg on windows without software has a specific problem and will recognise the page that solves it. Someone typing image converter may be doing anything.

The practical strategy for a newer site is to win a cluster of specific phrases rather than compete for one general one. Ten pages each earning a trickle beats one page earning nothing.

Where the real signals are, for free

  1. Search Console. The only free source of your own true data. The queries you already get impressions for — especially high impressions with low clicks — are pages that are nearly working.
  2. Autocomplete. What the engine suggests as you type is drawn from real searches. Type your seed and go through the alphabet after it.
  3. People also ask. A live list of the questions attached to your topic, and each one is a heading or a section.
  4. Related searches. At the foot of a results page, showing where searchers go next.
  5. Forums and support threads. How people describe a problem before they know the jargon — frequently the exact phrasing you are missing.
  6. Your own support inbox. Questions customers ask are questions strangers search for.

Reading a results page before you write

Search the phrase and look at what already ranks. That page is the engine telling you what it thinks the query means, and arguing with it rarely works.

Count the page types. Ten product pages means transactional intent and a blog post will not break in. Ten tutorials means the opposite. A mix means the intent is genuinely split and a page that serves both can win.

Then look for the gap. Are the results outdated, all for a different country, all assuming a budget your reader does not have? A gap in what exists is a better reason to write than a number in a tool.

Turning phrases into a page

One page, one primary intent. Cramming comparison, tutorial and pricing into a single page serves none of them well and confuses what the page is for.

Use the variations naturally as headings and sentences. You do not need to repeat a phrase to rank for it — search engines match meaning, and forced repetition reads badly to the humans who decide whether to stay.

Then verify against reality. Publish, wait several weeks, and read Search Console. The queries you actually receive are almost never exactly the ones you planned for, and that difference is the most valuable keyword research available to you.

Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored on this site.
