Alles entfernen nimmt alles heraus.

What your photographs are carrying

A photograph taken on a phone arrives with a great deal more than pixels. Typically: the GPS coordinates where it was taken, accurate to a few metres. The date and time to the second. The device make and model, and on many cameras its serial number. The lens, aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Often the software that last touched it, with a list of every edit, and sometimes a small preview of the original image from before you cropped it.

None of that is visible. All of it travels with the file when you upload it, email it or send it to someone.

The location data is the part that matters most. A photograph of something inside your home carries the coordinates of your home, and a photograph of a child at their school carries the coordinates of that school. Several social platforms strip metadata on upload; many services do not, and file-sharing links almost never do.

See it first, then remove it

The [msm_tool slug="metadata-remover"] reads each photo and lists what it found before anything is removed: the position, the camera and serial number, the dates, the software and edit history, the author, comments, the hidden preview, and anything an app has tucked in that it does not recognise. Several photos can be checked at once, and each one is marked with what will be removed and what will be kept.

Everything happens in your browser. Uploading a photograph to a service to remove its location would hand over the location.

Two modes

  1. Remove personal data takes out everything that points to you, your device or where you were. It keeps three things that describe the image rather than you: the colour profile, so the colours stay as they were shot; a copyright notice; and Content Credentials, the signed record some cameras and apps attach to show where an image came from.
  2. Remove everything takes all of it, those three included.

In both, one tag stays: the one saying which way up the photo is. Phones often store a picture sideways with a note to rotate it, and without that note it would appear on its side.

No quality loss

The metadata is cut out of the file, and the compressed picture is copied across exactly as it was. Nothing is redrawn or re-compressed, so a JPEG keeps every pixel, a PNG stays a PNG with its transparency, and a WebP stays a WebP. The file usually gets a little smaller, by the size of what was removed.

HEIC photos from an iPhone cannot be cleaned in place. Convert them with [msm_tool slug="heic-to-jpg"] first; the converted copy carries no location.

The hidden preview

Cameras and phones store a small thumbnail inside the file so galleries can show it quickly. Some editors update the picture when you crop it but leave that thumbnail alone — so a photo cropped to hide something can still carry a small copy of the original. It is removed in both modes.

What stripping does not do

It removes metadata. It does not remove information visible in the picture.

A street sign, a house number, a reflection in a window, a name badge, a school uniform, the view from a window — all of that survives untouched, and any of it can identify a location as effectively as coordinates. If a photograph needs to be anonymous, look at the image as well as the file. Pixelating a face does not remove the GPS coordinates either; the two jobs are separate and both are usually needed.

Nor does it change how an AI-generated image is recognised. Many image generators also hide an invisible watermark in the pixels themselves, and platforms run their own detection, so an AI image can still be identified and labelled whatever its metadata says. If you post AI-generated images, the major platforms ask you to say so.

When to strip

  • Anything you publish yourself — a blog, a portfolio, a listing, a marketplace. You control the upload, so nothing else will strip it for you.
  • Photographs sent by email or file link. These are almost never processed.
  • Photographs of your home, workplace or children. The obvious case, and the one people think of too late.
  • Images going to a client or a print shop, where camera settings and editing history are simply not their business.

When to keep it

Metadata is not inherently bad. Photographers rely on it to learn from their own settings, archives depend on capture dates for ordering, and a stock library will want camera information.

Strip a copy for publication and keep the original with everything intact. Once it is gone it cannot be recovered, and the date a photograph was taken is a surprisingly easy thing to lose permanently.
